All Goals, Great and Small

Published over 2 years ago • 3 min read

Hi Reader,

Want to build your strength, confidence, and integrity? Set a great goal for yourself and achieve it.

  • You don't have to tell anyone else, but you do have to write it down.
  • You don't have to include others in your plan, but you've got to have a plan.
  • You don't have to talk about it, but you have to look at your goal and plan every day.
  • You don't have to post updates publicly, but you have to make progress, big or small, every single day.
  • You don't have to suffer in silence; you can reward yourself for little wins along the way.

When you don't work on your own goals, you work on someone else's. There's nothing wrong with that; the best leaders serve others. However, you need a great goal of your own to keep you focused on your purpose, strengthen your skills, grow your confidence, and build your integrity.

Never be without a great goal.

When I ask people about their leadership goals, I get different reactions. Some become glossy-eyed because they're just trying to get through the day.

The majority fall in a range between those who've never articulated their goals before to those who are specific, write them down, and have a clear plan.

There's another group of people who have huge goals, convinced that they're going to save the world and solve all the problems that we face along the way. Maybe they're going to start a new business, make millions or billions of dollars in a very short period, and the Earth will be a better place for them having been here. You're sure they already have the casts for the statues.

Their goals are exciting. Their vision is vivid and clear, and when you hear it, you can't help but want to join them, give them money - anything to be a part of the excitement. Their enthusiasm is contagious and addictive. You'd hate missing out.

Then it strikes you. You realize these folks don't work on their goal, which becomes apparent when you ask them, "How much?" and "By when?" They get confused. "A lot" and "Soon" is their vague reply, if they reply at all. The illusion comes crashing down because as exciting as a big goal is, it's irrelevant without working on it. They are no better than those trying to get through the day without falling asleep at work - at least those people exert some effort.

Some say small people create small goals, and giant people make giant goals. I don't care about the size of your goal, and I don't care if it's SMART; I want it to be intelligent, and I want it to be great for you.

  • Setting a great goal influences your daily thoughts, which will impact your beliefs.
  • And if it impacts your beliefs, it will influence your attitude.
  • And shifting your great attitude will influence your choices.
  • And if you make great choices, you're going to practice great behaviors.
  • And if you act on your great behaviors, you'll have great experiences in life.
  • Great experiences create great emotions, which compel you to think even greater thoughts.

It's essential to have a great goal that you work on - not an irrelevant goal that you talk about all the time but never do anything to move forward. If you do that, you are the boy who cried wolf.

It's better to quietly commit to a goal for yourself and to a trusted advisor, friend, or colleague who will hold you accountable to yourself. It's better to work on a great goal quietly every day, regardless of its size, than it is to make noise as you pretend to chase something.

Keep advancing confidently in the direction of your dreams, and help others along the way.

Lead Well,

-Karl
